Are the three games totally meaningless or do they have a purpose. I know it may sound a stupid question but i'm a noobie to this sport (UK)

It does have significance. The preseason isn't really for the starters, it just allows them to get some of the rust off. Its really for the other players that will fill out the 53 man roster, as well as a team's practice squad.

They're exhibition games, similar to "friendlys" in association football. They're mainly to give real game experience to players to prepare them for the season, and to get a better look at backups why might or might not make the 53 man roster at the start of the season.
The final score does not matter usually, although nobody wants to lose 35-0.
Fun Fact: Last season, the Lions were the only team to go 4-0 in the preseason, becoming the mythical "preseason champs"

First of all, they play 4 preseason games and yes they are important to see who is the better player at a position so when it counts they have the right guys in.

well first of all buddy theres 4 preseason games, and for the 2 teams that play the hall of fame game theres 5. and no these games dont mean anythiing, there basically for the starters on the team to play a quarter or 2 and get ready for the real season, and for the coaches to decide some of the starters, and for them to decide who gets cut.

not much significance anymore, but back in the day the professional athlete had to have a real job in the off season. so the preseason got the players back into game shape

Well first there are 4 preseason games....They are played mostly to evaluate depth at each position. Usually your starters from year to year are set but its the bench players that need to be worked out....that is what preseason is for....

it is beneficial for younger players as well as players who are battling for starting jobs. For the rest of the players they are meaningless but at the same time are used to get their timing down and get mentally ready. Also for players who are just trying to make the team, the preseason is the world to them.

Starters have an opportunity to dust off the rust, players compete for roster spots, and an opportunity to get in synce with teammates without the games counting. It is a glorified practice game.
Thumbs up to those who agree.

They serve a purpose.. thats for the owners. They get more revenue with more home games, even if it is preseason. Other than that there is no benefit.
