Can someone explain this in more detail for me?

In the article proclaiming that the Colts did not cheat, this is the last statement made " In the past, Colts general manager Bill Polian has vehemently argued that the Patriots have bent the rules in terms of use of replay challenges and the pass interference rule. "

How did they bend the rule? Can someone break it down in more detail for me? Thanks.

OH!!!!!!!!

i remember what was said about the replay rule. i've seen bellichick try and challenge more than his alloted challenges in a game (half). it is just like standing there talking to the sideline judge about things which will lead the thinking of that referee.

see, when you have no challenges left and a play comes up that you would have liked to been able to challenge... throw the red flag (it stops the game and there is no rule against it - yet). the refs stop the game to run over and tell the coach "sorry bub, you don't have any challenges left...." meanwhile in the replay booth the replay official says "hmm, wonder what the heck he is worried about..." and calls down to the field to say he's "reviewing" the last play under his own decision.

I don't know about the replay challenges thing but I believe the pass interference rule is in reference to a few years back several teams including the Colts complained the the Offensive Pass Interference rule was not being enforced by many officials and the Patriots took advantage of that. (But honestly they weren't the only team that benefited from that) Some will tell you the Colts whined and got the NFL to make a new rule, this isn't true, they and other teams simply wanted an existing rule to be enforced.

EDIT: I do agree with whaler, poor judgment from a ref isn't the fault of the benefiting team, but that's the way it's often gets framed. (The bad calls this past Sunday and the Super Bowl a few years back that the Steelers won are excellent examples) And this article certainly framed it that way. We also have to consider this isn't a direct quote from Polian. It's a writer summarizing a tense situation and trying to put it in general terms that are understandable to the average sports fan. Obviously, he failed but I'm not surprised considering some of the garbage I've read from the so called "experts" Yahoo hires to write for them. (Not just in sports but every where.)

EDIT2: I also think that sentence is in reference to things that have gone on in the past, not anything specific to Sunday's game.

There were some plays where the patriots and colts were maintaining contact down the field in the playoff game. They were good no calls for the most part, because both the recievers and defenders were engaging.

Use of replay challenges I have no idea what he is talking about. In no Indy game has Bill tried to challenge more than 2 times in a half, so I don't know what he is talking about. But this is Bill Polian, he doesn't know what he is talking about either.

How can the Patriots bend the rules of the interpretation by the officials. He was just upset his receivers got the crap kicked out of them. And after Sunday's game he shouldnt have a word to say about bad pass interference calls.

Bill Polian is a superior front office guy that just needs to keep his mouth shut. There is no need to sink to the level of some of the Patriots brass. Especially when the NFL just said nothing was done wrong.

Sorry but I expect more from Polian.
