The reason behind their long necks is genetics. They were born with it. Tall football players like Ronaldo or Aubemayang have a big neck. And not all football players have big necks (Messi, Maradona…)

Because they train. They exercise by the way it powers their neck muscles into not making them stiff.

I think the question may be more about American (gridiron) football than the “beautiful game,” so I will answer on that basis. One, gridiron players tend to be large, powerful men anyway and train (weight lifting, etc.) to develop musculature in many parts of their body, including the neck. In my football playing days 40 years ago, we were instructed to do specific exercises to strengthen our necks. In addition, remember that they are wearing a helmet for hours at a time that often weighs more than 2 kg, and their neck muscles are required to stabilize the head (which usually weighs about 5 kg) along with this additional weight for these extended periods on an almost daily basis due to practice and games.
