Question:
Why do people think that a white QB is better than a African American QB?
2008-12-23 11:16:24 UTC
Historically I would agree with you White qb's have been better. part of the reason is that black players are often pigeon holed from the beginning of their careers into recievers, and running backs. all the way from pop warner. While there are plenty of decent qb's of all races, White qb's are usually given more support through pop warner, high school, and college.

Thats no a knock on white quarter backs. Historically they are better, but eventually one has to believe that hispaninc, african american, and other minorities qb's will be good. Anybody that understands statistics can understand why white qb's seem better than black qb's. White qb's come into the nfl at a rate of almost 15-1 when compared with black qb's. For every Peyton Manning you have a Ryan Leaf. Just like for every Mcnabb you have a Shaun king. The simple fact that the majority of qb's in the league in college and pro's are white leads to the likelyhood that good quarter backs will be white.

Its basic statisitics.

And lets not kid ourselves. There is a reason for the labels. yes we are American, but what other COUNTRY in the world differentiates between their citizens. Blacks did not out the blue start calling themselves AFRICAN AMERICAN, or BLACK. the majority did (people of European ancestory).

There have been some great black quarterbacks like Doug Williams and Steve McNair. Some like McNabb and Garrad are still playing. Right now the top quarterbacks happen to be white, but I don't see a lot of great white running backs either. Michael Vick was a great athlete but never a great quarterback. I am one who sees 11 guys on the same team with uniforms and helmets on and that's all that matters regardless of their race. I don't think there is any conspiracy in not having the same amount of black QB's as opposed to whit QB's. Coaches at every level try to get the best at each position and a QB is only one of eleven guys on one side of the football.

I think color has nothing to do with how the team follows their leader. The leader on the offense is usually the qb.

If there was a better black athlete than a white one and can play the position so be it.

However in many cases there isn't one who can step up and be a leader.

Look at Micheal Vick. There is a good example of a great player that instills little or no confidence from the team.Either on or off the field anymore.

The bottom line is who can lead the offense to a win, not about color.

Look at Doug Williams of Washington Redskins a few years back. Good player but could lead his team to a win in the Super Bowl.

first off - why is it "white" but "african american", not "black"? You sound like you have a race axe to grind before you even ask

people dont think white qbs are better than black qbs. people just think all the black qbs that they've seen in the NFL suck, because most of them do. Its not like the Kordell Stewarts, the Vince Youngs, the Tarvaris Jacksons, the Seneca Wallaces dont get their chances to prove themselves, they just usually fail to. When you do have good black QBs like McNabb or Randall Cunningham or Warren Moon, though, no one has any problem with them.

Unless you're suggesting that the NFL is being held hostage by a cartel of racist high school football coaches? Believe me, there's enough schools out there that, if there was a black athlete that was good, he'd get his play time and he'd get scouted by colleges and he'd get a scholarship and he'd get drafted.

The NCAA and NFL are far too competitive and profitable to torpedo a team like that over racism, and a lot of high schools probably dont even have that many white athletes to choose from in the first place, depending where in the country you are.

Part of the race issue when it comes to Quarterbacking is racial stereotypes, and, for a lack of better terms, expectations. The "black quarterback is a running quarterback" precedent was set with people such as Randall Cunningham. Now, while he could run, he also had a great arm, and great vision. NFL owners, from there on out, automatically assumed that a Black QB must be a great runner too. (That is part of the Explanation as to why Warren Moon played like 5 years in the CFL.) Every black QB since then, whether they be real or fictitious, a la Jamie Foxx's character in "Any Given Sunday," is almost expected to run. They learn at a young age to "out athletic" everyone on the field. And that works, right until you hit the pros. As Jim Rome said of Vince Young, "You can't out athletic a league of athletes."

Part of it is also development. If a coach in high school said "Great you can run, what I want you to do is set your feet, go through your progressions, and move around the pocket when you have to" race wouldn't matter. But if you would see that QB in high school, the college scouts would automatically wonder why he doesn't run more. Coaches at the younger levels need to spend more time developing their QB's as quarterbacks, not as absolute freak athletes.

It's not even about the skin color. If they can get the job done well, then they should start not matter if they're black or white. McNabb has proven this. He's not a one dimension QB that looks to run when things get crazy. He'll look to throw first and run only when there are no other options. There are a lot of QBs that rely too much on their feet and not enough on their arms.

I dunno, if college football were all black coaches with four white coaches would we be having this same problem? No, we wouldn't.

People these days are so afraid of being racist and politically incorrect that they forgot about there race entirely.

I'm not being racist because I love the fact that black people are breaking these records and have risen against the odds to become a president. Besides, why would a racist be watching football and basketball anyway?

I just don't understand why everyone is so afraid of being racist. It happens all of the time.

So what? There isn't as many black quarterbacks. Black people are usually born with a different muscle structure than white people. They're bodies are more fit for positions like WR and RB anyway.

There's no more to your argument. Almost everyone who's posted has had some kind of argument toward it and now it's ripped into shreds. It's done.

I think that you are looking too deep into your quest for "who's a better quarterback". I think its all a matter of finding out what someone is best at. Check this out, the majority of Marathon winners end up being African descent. That's because they are used to the long running and the stamina. There are good black quarterbacks, but they aren't paired up with outstanding receivers, only good receivers/players. Remember how Randy Moss became famous? It was Randall Cunningham in Minnesota that helped him, they didn't accomplish the ultimate goal, but they were a good team. Warren Moon is another one...he was a good quarterback, unfortunately he had no outstanding support!!

Give me a break! Do you really think any coach, who's job is always on the line, looks at color before he looks at talent? If a qb can play in the sytem that best fits a program he'll play regardless if he's purple, yellow or green. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with talent and who can win.

Terrence W would be outraged , you stole his answer to 1 of your other questions and posted it as your question .

To answer your question :

It doesnt matter what color QB you have if he is good he is good if he sucks well he sucks .

You i mean Terrence W said already : For every Peyton Manning you have a Ryan Leaf. Just like for every Mcnabb you have a Shaun king.

That is true in the books but i believe black qbs have better overall talent such as running the ball(Vince Young), and other aspects also.Look at Micheal Vick(on the field not off)
2008-12-23 19:20:10 UTC
QB's job is to throw the football, not excape the pocket and run with it. It may work in college, but in the pro's, no, defense are a lot better.

its just one of those things that just happens. I mean all kickers are white and all cornerbacks are black... Does that mean a black guy cant kick or that a white guy cant cover? No, it just happens that way. Wether its culture and background, genes, or society playing roles, who knows. Any race can play any sport at any position and be successful at it. If ppl say whites are better they are just goin off history which is like u said, been dominated by white QBs.

The CORRECT answer (this may sound racist but whatever). Black QB's are naturally more athletic, which means that they've had to rely on their brains a lot less. And the NFL requires a smart, poised QB that makes good decisions. The white QB's were bred this way from the beginning because, let's face it, the white ones aren't nearly as fast or athletic.

i would say that white people specialize in a particular position, they utilize their talents and become good at the qb position. black people are more an overall all player, this may be stereotypical but black people are usually fast and big. big may be tall or buff, because of this they are of better use at wide receiver and running backs being more useful a that position rather than a qb

"historically they are better, but eventually one has to believe that hispanic, african american, and other minorities qb's will be good"

that is a racist statement.

there have been a number of really good black quarterbacks, pay attention, do you watch the nfl, ncaa, any of it? are you 12 years old?

warren moon, name me one white guy that played quarterback for the houston oilers, randall cunningham, doug williams, to name a few and there a alot of black quarterbacks comming up in the ncaa that are real good. there are alot of mediocre qbs in the nfl. most of them white.

because they are mentally insane and fail to realize that simply more whites have tried out for the position of QB.
2008-12-23 20:39:34 UTC
OK, i really don't think that Jamarcus Russell is as good as peyton. I mean Jamarcus can break an arm with his throws, but he isn't good at reading defenses.

"Blacks"-RB,WR,CB

"Whites"-QB,TE,O and D - line,Safeties.

"blacks" are generally faster, so when they play QB they are running threats

"Whites" generally are better at QB

and i blocked you because you can't ask a question without mentioning race.

race is a huge issue in this country.........i think they're should be equal opportunity for all football players to be qbs if they can handle the pressure...there just haven't been enough opportunites for other races to be a play caller.....there will be though within the next two generations i believe....more mcnair's and mcnabb's, less vicks...it'll be alright...

it's not about color

it's about talent

as more black QB's raise up, thru the college ranks, those #'s will change

why aren't you asking why there aren't more white running backs, and WR ????

or are YOU the racist?

Whit people have had a better education for longer, so have on average a higher IQ than hispanics and Blacks (not racist, Orientals have a higher IQ than us whites) and you've got to think quick when choosing who to pass to and how long to wait.
