Question:
Should there be an asterisk next to the Steelers 6 SB wins??? Read article!?
2009-02-13 11:50:00 UTC
No, not because of the biased refs (even though it is a good justification for the asterisk), but because of steroids

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9217162/Do-juiced-up-Steelers-teams-deserve-asterisks?&MSNHPHMA

I know that the NFL back then technically allowed steroids, but regardless, STEROIDS WERE ILLEGAL, PERIOD. Asterisk, anyone?

you will hear "quit crying" or "get over it" or "let it go" OR the very popular "they werent the only team to use them" OR "it wasnt illegal back then", lets add in "your just jealous".

Ok, so it DIDNT make you stronger and give you an advantage in the 1970s, but in 2009 it does? It makes no sense. It wasnt illegal in baseball either so why is everyone hating every single baseball player alive right now? Its because the US is in love with the Steelers.

How is it Pittsburgh fans (NOT ALL of them) always say the Patriots were cheating, but then you say ONE thing about the Steelers an your insulted and told to stop crying? Id like an explanation of how calling the Patriots cheaters ISNT crying?

I hate the Steelers. They are the epitome of what I would call garbage in the NFL. They act like childern. That being said, I think everyone needs to dump this "steroid" thing. You should all feel honored that these losers want to kill themselves for your petty entertainment. If the majority of them are using performance enhancers, which they probably still do, the field is level. When McGwire used Androstendione it wasn't illegal. Why is he such a pariah? Here's the real answer, casual sports fans couldn't care less. This whole asterisk movement has been perpetuated by a bunch of loser sportswriters who forgot that the stories they write are fuelled by these athletes. If the Patriots get an asterisk for cheating the way they did they deserve it for cheating in a substantially different and more lucrative way.

During the 70's the use of steroids were prevalent among most of the NFL teams, not just the Steelers organization, this includes the Cowboys and and the 49ers.

Steroids were not illegal in the 70's because so little of their side effects were known. Steroids were used among many top athletes in various sports. The problem with this article is that this sports writer is biased and has an extreme dislike for the Steelers organization. He never mentions the other teams or sports involved. As far as the Patriots taping, it was proven and the organization admitted to taping several games over several years knowing what they were doing was illegal. But frankly, I believe most of the NFL is over that as well. It is time to move on to a new season.

Fox Sports has a very poor reputation for their accuracy and diplomacy in journalism. Most true sports fans readily dismiss most of their articles for the true garbage that it is.

Mark Kriegel is quite possibly the worst sports writer on the face of the earth. I've been following the Fox Sports writers for going on 3 years now and for the most part, none of them are impressive. I dismiss most of the articles I read on Fox Sports as jokes before I am even done with the first paragraph.

If you read the article, you will notice that the only guys called into question on those Pittsburgh teams were the offensive lineman. Who cares? If the defensive linemen, or the linebackers from those amazing Steelers teams in the 70's were guilty of "juicing" you might have something there... but the Steelers offensive linemen from the 70's had about as much impact on the Steelers Superbowl wins as Ben Roethlisberger has had in the last 2... none.

When you can prove that the players that comprised those great defenses were cheating, than I'll agree to an asterisk.

I'm not condoning the use of steriods by the 70's Steelers, but it also raises a question of which other teams in the same era were also experimenting with them and how did their uses impact the seasons of other teams in the league (if any team in the league were, in fact, entirely clean)

The article continues to talk about the influence that the Steelers organization had on other teams and players. Does that mean we can instantly discount any other Superbowl winner because they may have had steroid (or human growth hormones when they became available) users on their team. Does this mean we instantly get to question the validity of the 49er's dominance in the '80's, or the Cowboys of the '90's. Additionally, do we now get to put an asterisk on each of the Patriots Superbowl wins in the '00's because they were caught cheating after the fact and at least some evidence supported the fact that they had cheated prior to this?

I'm not one for changing the record books after the fact, because when you start, it becomes a very slippery slope that leads to the questioning of every record in the game.

No. Maybe they might not have won all 6, but you cant fault a team that hasn't tested positive for anything, because of things their players 20 years ago did. I mean, for that matter we could go back and put asterisk's next to all the Raiders SBs as well since a bunch of them were implecated in BALCO even though they weren't even playing last time the Raiders won a SB. Makes no sense.

I do not condone it at all

but unfortunately

ALL the teams had some members back then that did it

are you going to put an asterick next to EVERY win?

by every team?

and the Pats had been caught and warned about their taping many times, by many teams !

the NFL had told them to stop it.

they didn't.

"NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets' defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion."

yes there WAS proof

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3014677

Belichick acknowledged that he violated NFL rules prohibiting filming opponents signals .

"I made a mistake," he said in the interview. "I was wrong. I was wrong."

they didn't stop

so they finally were fined

Get over yourself. Teams back then were using them as a form of medication. They weren't illegal, we didn't have the knowledge back then that we do now about them. So no, no asterisk.

Pats deserve an asterisk.

You're just jealous that the Steelers are now the most successful and probaly the best franchise in the NFL. Whats done is done and no use crying over spilled milk, get over it.

Yeah the Steelers were the only ones doing steroids in the 70's! No one else did it.

This is absolutely moronic.

Does anybody in the NFL really care about steroids that much? Besides it's not it was like it was some kind of linebacker taking them. It was offensive linemen. That doesn't give them that much of an advantage, you can still get past strong o-linemen.

pretty soon we will be putting asterisks on everything. How about taking back all of Mike Schmidt's records and kicking him out of the hall of fame? he admitted to using amphetamines during his playing days, especially on days games after night games.
