Question:
So, does the best team in football always win the super bowl?

I ask this because I saw a question asking who the best team was. Most people responded Saints and justified it by saying they won the super bowl. I don't know if they ever thought of this, but maybe the best team doesn't always win the super bowl. Some of the answers I here to some questions make me wonder if most people only watch one game a year, the Super Bowl.

Don't get me wrong, people can argue the saints were the best team, but please don't base it solely on the super bowl argument.

Personally I believe they were number 2.

The Vikings were better than the Saints. The Saints cheated their way to the super bowl win.

Benji, where do u get your facts from? The Colts only lost 2 games, and the final score in that super bowl was not 52-3, it was 49-26. lol, these guys make me laugh.

The Simple and correct answer here Is NO.

Depending on how much you look at or go by the teams statistics.

For the most part, the Saints Did have better overall stats than the Colts,

But the Favorite to Win Was the Colts.

The better "Perceived" team Doesn't always win,

(Super Bowl or any game for that matter)

We Must keep in mind, A team that seemingly has the better/best player(s)

ISN'T the "Whole" team.

Many NFL fans (including myself) thought the Minnesota Vikings

were better than the New Orleans Saints,

but the Saints Was the Better Team That day in the NFC Championship.

(for whatever reasons)

We Always like to say (out of good sportsmanship), that "The Better team won"

when in fact, the better team "THAT DAY" Won.

Super Bowl 44 was a good close game up to that 4th qtr interception,

and looked like Maybe the 1st O.T. in a Super Bowl might happen.

(if the Colts Tied the game instead of the "Pic for six" happened)

Manning making a bad decision with his pass cost him and the colts another SB win,

we'll Never know What Might have went on to happen If the

"Pic for six" never happened.

You are Right in believing that the Saints were number 2, hell,..maybe even number 3.

The Team that plays the best on Superbowl Sunday is the best team of the Day. Not necessarily of the NFL. Through the NFL season only the teams with most wins enter the playoffs. But that includes wild card teams, those teams that did not have the best record in their division, but have more wins than any other teams within their conference. So, playoffs becomes a whole new 1 game elimination process to cull out the teams not play worthy to go the next level. The chances then diminish for the the teams with the most wins to win it all. Example; Giants two yrs ago were a wild card team that won the Superbowl...gutsy play and desire beating the Pats who had a 16-0 season. So it is not necessarily that the best team statistically is the one that wins the SB. But when you have two #1 seeds of each conference in the Superbowl the argument that the Saints are the best team holds pretty damn true, If the Colts had won, we have the same argument about them. They both are pretty good teams and the colts lost because that day they made the most mistakes which allowed the Saints to capitalize on them and win the SB.

hope that makes sense, i sorta rambled on....but made my point.

I understand the arguement but I would like to put forth a flip side so to speak. Throughout the course of any teams season a team has to get hot and play well. Any team that has made it to the superbowl is worthy of praise. Obviously if a team didn't make the playoffs they cannot be the best team. However, I do believe once you get to the playoffs things get proven. By that I mean every sunday a team has to come out and prove they are the best. A loss at that point no matter how much of a fluke is hard to argue against. A team is only as good as they play on sunday and the ideal behind playoffs is the weaker teams get left behind. If the losing team is that good why did they lose. Granted I understand the arguement of the best team not winning the superbowl and at times it can come down to a questionable call. But if the losing team was truly the best why did it come down to 1 or 2 questionable calls.

I do think there have been upsets throughout the history of the NFL I guess the bigger question would be when an upset happens did the better team lose or did the better team that day win.

Usually yes but not always. A good example is the 1969 Super Bowl between the AFL New York Jets and the NFL Baltimore Colts. The Colts were thought to be one of the greatest teams in football history with only 1 loss that year that was later avenged. They were superior to the Jets in every way and were 17 point favorites yet the Jets behind the confidence and leadership of Joe Namath and a bend but not break defense upset the mighty Colts. You could also make a similar case for the St Louis Rams against the New England Patriots in the 2001 Super Bowl too as they were heavy favorites to win but unset by the Pats.

This year it was the best team than won and in some years it isn't

just the team that plays best during the playoff stretch. Colts in 2006-07 didn't play great in the regular season but won the Super Bowl, same with the 10-6 Giants in 2007-08, and 10-6 Steelers in 2005-06 who barely snuck in the playoffs as the 6th seed at 10-6

If the Jets won the Super Bowl this year somehwo I don't think it would mean they're really the best team

I don't think the "best" team always wins it, I think its the team that wants it more that wins it. Sometimes even in the regular season you see top teams lose to bottomfeeders. Its no different in the playoffs. There are few people that would say the Jets were a better team than the Chargers. Fewer would say that the Giants were better than anyone they played in the 07 playoffs. They played tougher, more disciplined football than the guys who lined up against them. Now looking at the Saints, let's not forget how they got pushed around by the Vikings in the championship game. They just didn't give the ball up 5 times.

Short Answer: No.

It is possible for the best team to not win the Super Bowl. In my opinion, the NY Giants were not the best team in 2007, yet they won the Super Bowl. The problem with football is that it is too rough of a sport to have a best of seven series like MLB and NBA, so we only play a one-game championship which increases the chance of a team winning by "fluke". The NY Giants are the rightful Super Bowl 42 Champions, and that can never be taken away from them, but I hardly believe they were the best NFL team in 2007.

Trust me, the Dolphins are a good team but they don't know how to close out games. All they need is a better QB and a more efficient run game. They have a decent defense but the offense needs to step it up. Trust me, as a Saints fan I thought that I would be an old woman before we won a Super Bowl.

No - in Super Bowl V (Colts vs Cowboys) there was no best team. It's maybe the worst Super Bowl ever played. Lots of turnovers on both sides and very sloppy play. The Colts won it at the end on a kick by a rookie kicker.

And based on the answers that I've seen you give to other questions, you believe the Vikings were number 1 right? And you base this on the fact that you're a fan of the Vikings right?

The team who wins the Super Bowl is always the best team in a given year by definition.
You're gonna love my nuts!
2010-02-19 01:12:00 UTC
Yes! The team that wins the Super Bowl is the best team for that given year. Period.

The ultimate goal is to win the Super Bowl, and if a team has what it takes to win the Super Bowl, they're obviously the best team. Perhaps not the most talented team on paper, but the best TEAM nonetheless. Colts and Chargers fans can whine all they want, but the bottom line is that they weren't good enough to win it all. If they were, they would have won it.

It's almost shameful to have to state the obvious, but sometimes it's necessary. The best team won the Super Bowl (as it does every year). And the best team was the New Orleans Saints.

No, the best team does not always win the Super Bowl. The Patriots were clearly the best team in the league back in 2007 but they got beat in the Super Bowl by the Giants, who were not even close to being the top 3 teams in the league that season.

Heck even the Cardinals just missed winning the Super Bowl last year had it not been for that last second touchdown. Before that, they haven't even been to a Super Bowl in their long history. That clearly shows that anything can happen in the Super Bowl.

Arguing who the best team in the NFL is easy, it is the team that wins the SuperBowl.

But wait, let's examine this further.

There are 16 regular season games in a season and then 1 play off game, and 1 divisional championship game, followed by the SuperBowl therefore 19 potential games.

On Any Given Sunday, any team can win the game. By a fluke play, a missed field goal, a blown call, anything, for any reason on Any Givin Sunday.

However, a team must make it to the playoffs to have the opportunity of playing in the SuperBowl and being considered the best team in the NFL for that season.

The New England Patriots went what 16-0 and then lost to the Giants in the SuperBowl,

The Colts went 13-0, lost the remaining 3 games of the regular season by pulling their starters, won in the playoffs, and lost in the SuperBowl to the Saints

The Chargers won the last 11 games only to blow it in the playoffs to the Jets.

Calls, Injuries, Fluke plays, stats all do not matter in the NFL

Because on Any Given Sunday anything can happen.

A few years back, the SD Chargers went to the SuperBowl by winning games in a very "lucky" manner. And only to be blown out by the 49ers in the SuperBowl 52-3 or something.

So, the best team in football always wins the SuperBowl.

The best team does not win the Super Bowl every year.

The team that wins is the team that plays well in the Playoffs and catches the breaks.

This year the Saints were ONE of the best teams in the NFL, but what would have happened if they did not win the coin toss in OT against the Vikings?

well this year's Super Bowl was the first Super Bowl since 1993 in which both the number 1 seed from the AFC and NFC made it all the way.

No matter the point spreads and media picks, the game is played to crown a champion....and unless the winner received points to clinch the win, then the best team wins the Super Bowl.

2008 New England Patriots 16-0 vs New York Giants 11-5

one of the the best super bowls ever and no the best team dosent always win only when they deserv it

Yes, they were number 2 to the Vikings .

The Saints lost to Tampa, and lets just say it was a playoff game that they lost in and therefore wouldn't have advanced any farther . Which would mean the Saints wouldn't win the Superbowl . (I hope they suck next year)

Who cares? Really. The goal is to win games, playoff spots, and super bowl. Champions win on the field. Being "best" and $1 will get you a cup of coffee and maybe some sympathy.

Yes, the best team is always the Super Bowl champion. If the Colts or the 2007 Patriots want to whine about losing on fluke plays, bad calls, or bad bounces of the ball so be it, but the best team, in my opinion, is the one who brings their A-game to the Big Game.

Not always. The team that plays the best over a 5-week span wins the Super Bowl. Sometimes it is the best team, like the '03 Patriots. Sometimes another team wins the big one, like the '07 Giants.

As for the Saints, they were a number 1 seed, so I think they deserve to be called the best team of 2009.

I think they actually were the best team this year. They had the best offense in the league that`s for sure. I think they won the Super Bowl because they were the best. Sometimes the best team doesn`t always get the Lombardi trophy, but it truly was the case this year.

guess you haven't watched football within the past few years alone. The Steelers were not the best team last year. The Giants were not the best team throughout the regular season the previous season. It just matters who last during the post-season

The vikings almost beat the saints...
