Tim Layden just wrote a good article in the latest issue of S.I. about big hits in the NFL. We as fans love seeing them, and players love delivering the blows, but are they good for the game? The devestating effects they have on the players is life threating. I understand they know this, and it is a risk they are willing to take, but are some of these hits unnessary? What's your opinion on it?

I thought the hit that Sheldon Brown put on Reggie Bush in the Playoffs was one of the hardest hits I've seen, and best of 2007.

No the best to me was the Taylor in the Pro Bowl against the punter....But hard hits are what made football what it is...And its stupid how every year they make some dumb thing about how to hit the other player...The QB can't even get touched because its a penalty...They should get hit just like any other player...The helmet to helmet is good but other than thats the NFL is getting a bit too soft lately...

Every sport has its potential for injury. Baseball pitchers are one of the more common forms of injury to themselves and other players because they throw the ball with such force that they can break fingers of the batter and also throw out their own elbows and shoulders. I don't think we should set reductions on pitching speeds, and I don't think we should set limits on big hits. There is a lot more emphasis placed on where hits are delivered than how they are delivered, such as helmet to helmet contact, clipping, chop-blocking etc., which can be very threatening to the well being of the players. I think big hits are a great part of the game, and these guys are pros, so they know how to dish out or take a lot of punishment, and usually can avoid serious injuries, although they will happen due to the nature of the game.

That is the game of football... you can legislate stuff like hitting late or leading with your helmet, but there's no way to have a rule about how hard you can or can't hit someone. My favorite segment on ESPN's NFL Primetime is Tom Jackson's "Jacked Up".

And yes, that hit on Reggie Bush was unbelievable. He got... JACKED UP!

Simply put, they make millions of dollars to deliver those hits and to take those hits. Would you rather risk your life in Iraq making minimal amounts of money or take hits in the NFL?

They are a big part of the game and always will be. The only thing that will change will be the continuing evolution of the pads they wear.
