A safety, in football, is caused when the offensive player with the ball is tackled inside his own endzone (100 yards from his objective). Thus, the team playing defense gets 2 points for acheiving this rare, hard-to-do event.

So if you have the ball, and I tackle you in your endzone, I get 2 points. Cool?

The defense.

A Safety is when the the opposing team sacks the opposing teams quaterback in thier end zone.

For Example lets say Matt Hasselbeck and the Seahawaks are on the Pittsburgh 1 yd line. Pittsburgh Strong Saftey Troy Polanalu breaks through the line with his funky hair flying everywhere and sacks Hasselback back in the Pittsburgh end zone.

Pittsburgh the defenenders gets 2 points and then Seattle hae to kick the ball.

When the offense is caught,(or downed),in the defenses end-zone the defense will score 2 points as well as having he ball punted to them as a free kick.
