Championships won prior to the AFC/NFC merger and the start of the Super Bowls are referred to as *league* championships.

Since a team has to win its league to be in the Super Bowl, those are counted as league championships as well but Super Bowl wins are counted separately.

If you live in Pittsburgh, they only count Super Bowl era wins.

Remember the first four Super Bowls were actually the game between two leagues to determine a true professional football champion. After the merger, the Super Bowl (starting with SB V) became the NFL championship game.

I believe official championships, although the NFL was founded in 1920, begin count with the 1933 season. I may be incorrect with that one though.

I don't think any previous championships are counted as super bowl wins. The Super Bowls are the only games in which the champions of the NFL and AFL (now the NFC and AFC) played each other.

Well of course you do.The NFL has been around a whole lot longer than the Super Bowl

and it is a disservice if you do not recognize all the Championships before the SB.

They are really one in the same thing.

Marketing and restructuring do not change the fact that they won the championship
