If you go way back the NFL teams of the 1920's, there were a lot of awful ones. Over a 5-year span (1925-1929), the Dayton Triangles won two games. The Hammond Pros won 5 games from 1921 through 1926. And the Rochester Jeffersons had four consecutive no-win seasons. Remember back then, people were smaller. Most played as a part-time or seasonal job. They didn't lift weights, watch what they ate, or studied. In some cases, they played high school teams to boost their records. It was rare for anyone to weigh more than 220 pounds. And football, like all team sports at the time, had few if any blacks. We can quibble over which were the best college team was the best and which pro team was the worst. (For best college team, I could make a strong case for last year's Alabama team.) But it wouldn't be close. College team by a mile. I'd bet mortgage money on the college team and give 30 points.

I believe the Lions are the worst team ever. When you are talking about stats, then it would be easier to say the Bucs of the 70's era was the worst team. But as another person said, the Lions went 0-16 in the era of the salary cap. Which means you have more at your disposal than you did years ago. Also the fact that they couldn't win a single game says to me they are the worst. How is it that every Sunday you come out, and you can't win a game despite trying? They are the worst. No team ever went 0-16 and the Lions did. As far as stats are concerned, the defense is what killed the Lions. Giving up 517 points? Only 4 team interceptions? Amongst those stats that is the worst team. The Lions have talent on offense, but a a lot of the losses come on defense. There were a couple of games where the offense held their end up, but the defense gave up. Sorry the Lions are the worst in NFL history.

Definately the 76 Bucs. That team was trash from top to bottom. GM, Coaching Staff, Players, Uniforms haha. That losing streak was a complete joke. I bet the Lions dont come close to that. Shame on anyone that thinks the Lions were worse.

There was nothing positive to say about that team, the others you can find something that makes them better than this team.

Calvin Johnson alone makes the Lions better than this squad.

The 2008 0 and 16 Detroit Lions are the worst. They are the first team to complete a winless season since the league went to a 16 game schedule. The 1976 Tampa Bay Bucaneers are the runner up.

According to the stats that you've provided in combination with the team's win-lost record, the 2008 Lions team is the worse NFL team ever. The bright side is the Lions have no where to go but up... Even if they end a game in a draw, its an improvement... But in my opinion, the Lions will never truely be a good team as long as Matt Millen is still there...

1976 Bucs. They averaged 9 pts a game.

All of the other teams either won a game and the Lions came very close to winning a few.

The Bucs were never close.

2008 Lions. Although I am a huge Detroit Lions fan and have been all my life they should have won at least 1 game. They are professionals who couldn't come together and collaborate one win.... No excuses, poor execution combined with poor coaching, a horrible defensive secondary, and not much heart...... If you look throughout the Lions history they have had very few winning seasons and this boils down to the lousy way the Fords have conducted their overall management and hiring procedures.... They have never demanded anything from anybody... It's just sad...

First, I respect your objectivity as a Cowboys fan to include a Cowboys team as one of the "finalists" for this dubious honor.

Second, just wondering why there are no teams on this list prior to 1971. There were around 40 seasons of professional football prior to that year. Can we say with any certainty there were no dreadful teams during this almost four-decade period? Perhaps we need to be football historians to know for sure, but although I have little hard data to back it up, we should include the 1958 Packers on this list (who happen to be MY favorite team!). This was the year before Vince Lombardi became head coach. I recall this team only won one game, and was so lax, the coach actually played cards with the players!

But I degress. The teams on your list all have a claim to "the title" (I don't think we can evaluate teams solely on their record, so we can't claim a team is better than Detroit simply because they won one lowsy game).

But my choice would be the 1976 Bucs. Sure, the uniforms that looked like Creamsicles didn't help, but totally apart from their record, this was a team that was truly inept. It's not a knock on their coach (John McKay, who was highly successful at the college level), but was a classic case of the "first-year-of-existance blues." A new coach on a new team with new players (most of them cast-offs from other teams) who never played together before is a recipie for disaster in a competitive league like the NFL. And having the opportunity to actually watch this team in action on occasion reinforced my belief that they were doomed from the start. To have even one victory that year in my view would have been a grand accomplishment.

Gotta give the team & their fans credit, though. They hung in there, eventually established themselves, and eventually made it all the way to Super Bowl champs! So I'm not knocking the Bucs or their fans in general - but that inaugural year of 1976 was just something they all just had to endure.

Thanks for the stats. You gave us good reminders of some teams we might have overlooked. And isn't it encouraging that most of them eventually became World Champions? Hang in there Lion, Saint, and Bills fans -- your day will come someday!

The Lions, simply because they did it in the salary cap era, when teams have no excuse to be consistently bad. They've had high pick after high draft pick, and ample opportunities to find free agent help. And, of course, they went out and lost EVERY SINGLE GAME they played. At least your '89 Cowboys were able to beat the hated Redskins.

1976 Bucs. They were a complete laughingstock. Remember, they lost 26 straight games to start their franchises history.

The '96 Jets also went 1-15. That team was under Richie Kotite, and featured a wide receiver named...Keyshawn Johnson!

Anyhow, out of your list, I'd say this year's Lions are the bottom of the barrel.

Detroit, they never won a game and also they only had 4 int and 32 fumble recoveries. 4 int is ridiculously low
