All my friends talk about sports all the time, but I haven't been much of a sports guy. I guess I feel sorta left out so I'm asking if you guys could share your favorite teams and players with me :) so I can get an idea. Where to look for updates on matches and stuff. If there's one that i can acess with my iPhone, that would be great. Thanks. :D

It may seem obvious, but NFL.com and the NFL Network (TV) are the best places to get NFL information. ESPN is also a pretty good source. If you are an iPhone user (I also am) ESPN has the "ESPN ScoreCenter" app which allows you to set up your favorite sports and teams and check for scores and updates on the fly.

If you watch Total Access on NFL Network you will get a pretty good rundown on whatever is happening around the league. If you want to learn a little more about X's and O's you could watch NFL Playbook (NFL Network) or NFL Matchup (ESPN).

There are some pretty good columnists you could read also. I like Mark Maske (Washington Post), Peter King (Sports Illustrated) and Adam Schefter (ESPN).

If you have Sirius/XM there is a great show called "Moving the Chains" which is usually hosted by Tim Ryan (former NFL player...no real breakthrough insight there) and Pat Kirwin (former NFL front office exec/Jets GM). Kirwin makes the show interesting because you get real insights into the business side of football.

My favorite team is the Giants since i am from New York City, but if you are starting from zero you might want to follow certain players, coaches or play styles.

There are teams that are fun to watch because they play great offense (New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, Arizona Cardinals), good defense (Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, San Diego Chargers) or have amazing history (Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys)

Just jump in. If you just start watching the playoffs you will learn a lot. Most of the teams remaining are really fun to watch so now is a great time to jump in.

I don't mean to be rude, but its not the kind of thing where people tell you one or two facts and all of a sudden you'll be all caught up, you know? You won't get anywhere with a couple of names.

The only way you'll become a fan and be able to join in the conversations is if you pick a team, follow them and start watching. You can easily find the schedule info and stuff on the internet (try Yahoo! Sports or ESPN). Right now, the regular season is over and its playoff time (only 8 teams remaining). The new season will start in September.

But just start watching and talk to your friends about it- that's the only way to get into a sport.

Have fun!

Yahoo Sports is a great site and loads much faster than NFL.com, though not as detailed.

The past 10 years, the NFL has had the following solid teams: Colts, Patriots, Chargers, Steelers, Packers, and a few others. Colts and Patriots rivalry has dominatead those years, as they are two of the best, if not the best teams of the decade. Evidenced by the Pats three superbowl wins, and the Colts quarterback Peyton Manning's 4th MVP, the most by and NFL player.
No really, think about it

I agree with the "girl". The only way to truly "get into" a sport is to start watching. The other answers gave you suggestions to info, but that won't do a bit of good if you don't know anything about the teams, history or players they're talking about. Just start watching. Watch these playoffs for now. If football is truly for you, you'll start liking certain teams and certain players, and you'll be hooked from there. You'll follow these guys next year and throughout. Remember, sports isn't for everybody, just because you're a guy, doesn't mean you HAVE TO like sports. I do, but several of my friends don't. And don't try memorizing or looking up some random stat, just to fit into a conversation. Because true fans will know you don't know what you're talking about. Start watching the actual teams and games, and if its for you, you'll grow to love it gradually.
